We are a small working line German Shepherd breeder in Washington state. Imported Czech and East German lines. We breed for a balanced "do anything" shepherd. Our dogs are our family, not our livestock.
Granite Mountain German Shepherds is located in the beautiful Methow Valley in North Central Washington. Due to our rural location, we provide delivery of your chosen pup to Seattle or Wenatchee after our pups turn 8 weeks. Our dogs live with us on our farm as part of our family. They do not live in kennels and we keep our breeding program small to give each of our dogs the love, attention, training, and care they very much deserve. We focus on quality, healthy shepherds who can do anything. We strive to produce dual-purpose family and working dogs with the drive and endurance to excel in search and rescue, detection, obedience, agility and more, while still having the level disposition and off-switch to come home and snuggle the kids at night.
We fell in love with German Shepherds decades ago and in 2013 we acted on our passion! Since then, we have adopted compatible breeding pairs of working line German Shepherds. We test for hip and elbow health and Degenerative Myelopathy before breeding any of our dogs. If they do not test up to our standards, they do not breed. We also title our dogs in areas such as Search and Rescue, Explosives detection, Narcotics detection & the Canine Good Citizen certificates before breeding.
Our dogs are part of our family. They are well adjusted in a variety of situations, such as; visitors, parks, farm animals, wildlife, children, cats, chickens, vehicles, on-leash, off-leash, road trips, backcountry hiking, skiing, hunting, etc. They run our 7 acre farm and go on weekly adventures with us. The pups are born in our living room and spend their first 3 weeks there. Next they move to their puppy room with a larger indoor play area and a large outdoor play area surrounded by our adult dogs. Pups are raised around children, cats, indoor and outdoor play, farm animals and visitors. Pups receive daily early neurological stimulations (ENS) from the critical 3-16 day window in addition to daily sound exposures like ambulance sirens, door bells, cats meowing, fireworks, car horns, and gun shots. We take pups on trips to town starting at 6 weeks to get them used to riding in cars and to introduce them to new smells, sounds, and people. Pups are introduced to different floor surfaces, indoor sounds, outdoor sounds, and loud sounds. This early introduction to an array of stimuli leads to well-rounded, confident temperaments in our pups with an improved stress response later in life. In addition, ENS has also been shown to improve cardiovascular health and immune response later in life. We temperament test at 7 weeks to best assess a pup's strengths and areas of growth to best match them to their families.
Granite Mountain German Shepherds began breeding because we believe that proper breeding with desirable genes in a healthy, well-rounded environment creates superior working dogs and family companions. It is not nature versus nurture but rather nature working with nurture. We put a huge emphasis on early and extensive socialization, proper hygiene, room to run, and lots of love and human interactions. Our pups get to romp and play on our farm - not live their early lives in a kennel. As a result, our pups are well-rounded, healthy, confident, easy to potty train, and affectionate. Our dogs are an integral part of our family and they spend their days playing in the yard, exploring the farm, and sleeping in our living room. Parents are DM checked and OFA certified for hips and elbows so you know you're getting a healthy pup! Their pedigrees are filled with working titles and health checks. We LOVE our dogs!
